Doctor On TikTok Says Chores Will Help Kids Be Happier And I Agree
When I was growing up, I had chores starting around the age of 7 or 8 years old. Growing up with three brothers meant I did lots of inside chores and they did more outside. Vacuuming and ironing were two of the chores I did once I got a bit older. I also was responsible for setting the table every night. Chores are good for kids as it adds structure to their lives. And a doctor agrees!
According to Today, pediatrician and dad of five Dr. Williams says kids doing chores will make them happier and more successful as adults. The Utah doctor says that kids pitching in around the house helps them in realizing the needs of others. In addition, it helps them develop empathy. Dr. Williams says according to a long-term Harvard study, people doing more chores at a younger age had more professional success and happiness in life.
Chores help kids develop a good work ethic as well as learn responsibility. As much as I hated ironing, I knew that I had to get it done if I wanted to do fun stuff. Of course, I never iron now, but I do other chores I learned as a kid. Doing chores for an allowance also lets kids realize the value of money, in addition to helping them learn a good work ethic.
Although I don’t have kids, I did help to raise two children for years while married to my second husband. The kids would do certain things, like make their bed and take out the trash. When the topic of an allowance came up, I explained that some chores you do as part of a family. Taking the dog on a long walk or cleaning up the bathroom was allowance worthy chores.
It’s good for kids to learn how to do things on their own. Also, there’s a sense of pride in accomplishing tasks. Making a cool chore chart is a great idea if you have little ones! They’ll love checking off what they’ve done.
