One of the most important things college students learn during their four, five, or (gulp) six years on campus has nothing to do with professors or textbooks. It has everything to do with how they handle their money. I'm talking about budgeting, and there's no better place to start learning than at the supermarket.
Once your kid decides to move off campus and drop the college meal plan, the real fun begins. They'll have to quickly figure out ways to get the most groceries for their money. When I was in college, I had it easy. One of my roommates came from a family of restaurateurs, so he was always bringing food back from his weekend trips home. But most college students won't have that luxury.
Elon News Network reports that Harris Teeter has announced a 10% brand-wide discount for students of several colleges and universities in the Carolinas and Virginia through October 3rd. To claim the offer, students must present their college identification along with their VIC card at checkout. After October 3rd, the discount drops to 5% and lasts through May 28, 2024.
Students from Elon University can save even more money on College Night at the Harris Teeter on South Church Street in Burlington, NC. On Wednesday, August 30 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., students with a college ID and VIC card will get 20% off all store goods. According to Harris Teeter's website, a number of their stores in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia have been participating in the College Rewards program over the last couple of years. It would be worth finding out if any other locations are also hosting College Nights.
