Last year, it was Lite-Brite, the top, and Masters of the Universe. Which toys will be chosen in 2023? The Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester, New York, has announced this year’s candidates for induction into the National Toy Hall of Fame, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. One of the nominees should come as no surprise at all.

Thanks to the massive success of the blockbuster movie Barbie, the Ken doll is in the running for the first time. Ryan Gosling, Simu Liu, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Ncuti Gatwa, Scott Evans, and John Cena should be proud. Although, it does seem like this is long overdue. Barbie herself was inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame’s inaugural class back in 1998.

Ken joins eleven other nominees for the Class of 2023. Here are all twelve in alphabetical order:

  • baseball cards
  • Battleship
  • bingo
  • Bop It
  • Cabbage Patch Kids
  • Choose Your Own Adventure books
  • Connect 4
  • Ken
  • Little Tykes Cozy Coupe
  • Nerf
  • slime
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

You can vote online for your favorite once a day through September 20th. The three toys that receive the most public votes will join three other top submissions from members of the National Selection Advisory Committee. The finalists are judged for their icon status, longevity, discovery, and innovation. Will Barbie’s plus-one get in? The National Toy Hall of Fame will reveal the winners on November 9th.
