The 10 Best Cities For Job Seekers Are Too Far Away
Every day for the next four months, my wife and I are going to be saying the same thing: “Can you believe Sam is graduating from college in May?” It’s true. Our oldest son will be leaving UNC with a bachelor’s degree and heading out into the world for whatever is next in his life. I have no doubt that Sam will find gainful employment. My question has more to do with how far away that first full-time job will take him.
Personal finance site WalletHub is out with its annual list of the best places to find a job in the United States. They ranked 182 cities across the nation on 31 key factors related to job-market strength, including average starting salary, employment growth, and housing affordability. In 2024, the best city for jobs is Scottsdale, Arizona, which is much too far away. Here are the top ten:
Best Cities to Find a Job in 2024 (WalletHub)
- Scottsdale, Arizona
- Tampa, Florida
- Salt Lake City, Utah
- Columbia, Maryland
- Austin, Texas
- Atlanta, Georgia
- Seattle, Washington
- Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
- Plano, Texas
- Boston, Massachusetts
There’s not one in the Carolinas. You have to look further down in the ranking for that. Columbia and Charleston are the highest ranking South Carolina cities at 21 and 22, respectively. Raleigh, North Carolina lands at number 31. Charlotte is 39th on the list.
So far, Sam has been interviewing for jobs in Washington, DC; Indianapolis, and Detroit. It could be worse. At least those cities are all in the Eastern Time Zone. Ultimately, we hope he finds meaningful work that pays well in a place that makes him happy. This is the dilemma for parents. You want your kids to successfully launch into adulthood but, at the same time, you don’t want them to fly too far from the nest. Then again, even if they do, they may come back.
Like Father, Like Son(s)?
After I graduated from college in Pittsburgh, I stayed in Pennsylvania for a few months. I took a job at a radio station in Erie. That lasted through the summer. I quit and decided to chase after a girl who had moved to Seattle for graduate school. After a couple of years out there, as well as a break-up, I moved to Austin, Texas to continue my career. That’s also where my wife and I met and got married. In fact, Sam’s middle name is Austin because of that.
Eventually, I returned to the East Coast to start my family. It was the right choice for us. What will the future look like for both of my sons? Only time will tell. I just wish Charlotte ranked a bit higher on this list. You can see the complete 2024 ranking of the best cities for job seekers HERE.
