Charlotte FC May Be The Only Beacon Of Hope For Local Sports Fans In 2024
Fans of Charlotte’s professional sports teams haven’t had enough to celebrate for quite some time. The Charlotte Hornets haven’t been to the NBA playoffs since 2016. This season, they have one of the worst records in the league so it looks like they’ll be missing the postseason again. The Carolina Panthers haven’t had a winning record since 2017 and we don’t need to talk about how this season ended. The one bright spot among Charlotte’s major pro franchises is David Tepper’s other team, Charlotte FC.
In 2023, Charlotte FC made its first Major League Soccer playoff appearance. That didn’t stop David Tepper from firing head coach Christian Lattanzio. Normally, a coach is rewarded for taking a team to the playoffs. Then again, there’s nothing normal about the way Tepper manages his team personnel. I wish the team’s third coach in three seasons, Dean Smith, all the luck in the world. Hopefully, he enjoys as much success as his late namesake did in Chapel Hill.
Save Us, Charlotte FC!
To borrow a phrase from Seinfeld, Charlotte has been a “deep yawning chasm” when it comes to professional sports. However, if you haven’t been to a Charlotte FC match at Bank of America Stadium, you should go this year. It’s a fun, energized atmosphere where the home team actually wins. I know that seems harsh. I also know that the Carolina Panthers and Charlotte Hornets will eventually see better days but that will take time. Unfortunately, it will probably be a long time.
At the moment, it feels like the Queen City is where NFL and NBA careers come to die. Not necessarily for the players, though. They simply move on to greener pastures with other teams. Christian McCaffrey may very well win a Super Bowl with San Francisco this season. But coaches and front office executives around here have not had an easy time of things as of late. The Panthers will be starting over, yet again, with a both a new head coach and general manager next season. The Hornets’ new majority owners, Gabe Plotkin and Rick Schnall, have plenty to figure out as well. The teams and fans, alike, need to see some stability and success.
The 2024 MLS season gets underway next month. I’m eager to see if Charlotte FC can get themselves back to the playoffs and give local sports fans a reason to celebrate again. Tickets for Charlotte FC’s home opener against New York City FC on Saturday, February 24th are already on sale. Seats for the rest of the home schedule (below) will be available beginning January 11th for Season Ticket Members, January 12th for CLTFC subscribers, and January 16th for the general public.
