A South Carolina University Offers Scholarships To Cornhole Players
A game many of us have played in our backyard, on the beach, or while tailgating before watching college football is also a Division I collegiate sport in its own right. In fact, Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina has just signed two high school cornhole players from Colorado to scholarships.
According to KUSA-TV, Jaxson Remmick and Gavin Hamann from ThunderRidge High School in Highlands Ranch, Colorado are the nation’s first ever 5-star Division I cornhole recruits. They made it official on National Signing Day, which was February 7th.
I suppose this isn’t entirely surprising. Cornhole as an organized sport has been growing over the past several years and is shown regularly on TV. It should also come as no surprise that Winthrop University would be the first school to take this historic step. Rock Hill is home to the American Cornhole League headquarters and world championships.
Jaxson Remmick and Gavin Hamann appear to be paving a new and fun way to get a college education. Winthrop University cornhole coach Dusty Thompson says, “This is something that is now going to give kids an opportunity to get scholarships, potential full rides eventually.” It could also lead to NIL deals and pro careers for kids like Jaxson and Gavin.
Winthrop isn’t the only Division I school with a cornhole team. How far will collegiate cornhole go? Only time will tell, but I foresee schools of all sizes in every state starting teams. And I wouldn’t be shocked if, someday, we’re all filling out brackets for “March Bag-ness!” You read it here.
