Anne Hathaway Had To Kiss 10 Men In ‘Gross’ Audition
Anne Hathaway has revealed that in the 2000s, producers on a film she was starring in required her to kiss a succession of potential co-stars. During this time, Hathaway starred in films such as Princess Diaries, Ella Enchanted, The Devil Wears Prada, The Other Side of Heaven, Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, Havoc, Brokeback Mountain, and Nicholas Nickleby.
Speaking to V Magazine, the actor said that in the 2000s, it was considered normal to ask an actor to “make out with other actors to test for chemistry. Which is actually the worst way to do it.”
Anne Hathaway Had To Kiss 10 Men
She revealed that the producers told her they were bringing in “10 guys,” adding that Hathaway was cast for the role. Then, they allegedly asked her: “Aren’t you excited to make out with all of them?’ With the pushiness of the request, Hathaway questioned to herself if there was something wrong with her because not only was she not excited, but she found the whole thing to be “gross.”
However, she did as she was instructed, as she was a young, rising actress at the time. She told the publication how she was overly conscious about how easily she could have lost her career and been labeled “difficult,” so Hathaway acted as if she were excited with the make-out sessions she would have to participate in. Though she felt gross about it, she clarified to the publication that it wasn’t a power play to try to hurt her or be awful towards her, “it was just a very different time, and now we know better.”
This isn’t the only time Hathaway has commented on her early years as an actress. As we previously reported, Hathaway revealed a completely inappropriate question she was asked by a reporter when she was just 16 years old: “Are you a good girl or a bad girl?” Then, she said how she was told she had “no sex appeal” at the start of her career.
Casting For The Idea of You
Hathaway, who stars and produces the upcoming rom-com The Idea of You, knew she was going to cast co-star Nicholas Galitzine as the love interest from early on. Hathaway stars as a 40-year-old single mother named Solène, “fully embracing her sexuality at a time in her life and a woman’s life where, traditionally, we begin to be erased.”
Much to the plot’s excitement surrounding the single mother accidentally meeting a boy band phenom named Hayes Campbell (Galitzine), Anne’s character soon embarks on an unexpected love affair.
As for what it was like to cast her love interest, Hathaway recalls her fellow producers had met a number of young men already, but when Nick walked in, she found herself laughing because he was “so ridiculously perfect for the part. I just thought: he is it. Is he gonna be able to read the lines? Read the lines; great. Okay, can you sing? Oh, my God, he can sing. Wait, and he can play the guitar? Okay, and he’s just fun to be around. He’s just charming. Like, he’s just charmed this entire room.”
Galitzine took part in a non-sexual chemistry test for the rom-com Red, White & Royal Blue. In it, he plays Prince Henry, a member of the British monarchy who begins a relationship with the son of the first female President of the United States. Director Matthew Lopez described the Zoom chemistry read as “quite literal chemistry. I think you could feel the atoms swirling between them,” even though Galitzine and co-star Taylor Zakhar Perez were on opposite sides of the ocean.
