UPDATE: 3 U.S. Marshals, 1 Officer Killed In Charlotte Shooting
UPDATE: 3 U.S. Marshal officers and 1 officer were killed today near the plaza in this Charlotte shooting incident and it had social media in a frenzy. According to reports, the US Marshalls were attempting to serve a warrant when the suspect began opening fire.
The chief of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department confirmed an officer with the department and three members of the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force were killed in a shootout Monday while serving a warrant in east Charlotte.
Police believe two shooters may have been involved. They said two persons of interest, a 17-year-old and a woman, were taken to the police station for further investigation.
“We have two people of interest at the police station that are being questioned right now,” Police Chief Johnny Jennings said during the presser. “And we have confirmed that the individual that was set up that we were serving the warrant on was the individual who fired the initial shots and was deceased in the front yard at the end of all of this.”
Residents in east Charlotte submitted many videos of the active scene. In the videos, you can hear the resident saying officers had cut his fence to get to the yard next door. I would assume this resident’s backyard is next to or near a yard they needed to access to find the suspect or suspects they were looking for. Below is footage of injured officers being taken to an area hospital after being shot during the active shooter scene.
Prayers are with the officers who are injured. We will continue to see where things go from here as we get updates on the entire situation. See a full news report here.
Footage from Charlotteans all over the city reports the melee of gunfire and hectic activity near the plaza. It’s still unclear how many officers were indeed shot and the extent of their injuries, but reports are stating multiple officers were injured. CMPD released crime statistic reports for 2023 showing violent crime rates remained flat and the credit was attributed to the successful operations. I’m sure CMPD officers are doing everything they can to keep the community safe, but I am on NextDoor and I see a lot of the crime and it could make someone wonder if the rate really was flat. Below is a post from Next Door. The person who posted stated the individuals came to his door unannounced. It’s possible these individuals were at the wrong home, but I can understand why someone would be apprehensive about someone approaching their door late at night.
