Charlotte wants to bring back its biggest event. The city has put together a strong bid to get the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Basketball Tournaments back from 2027 to 2029. The event was a huge success during its previous 14-year run, bringing in $600 million for Charlotte's economy.
The Charlotte Sports Foundation and Regional Visitors Authority are working together to bring back a tournament that moved to Baltimore in 2021. Lower attendance and expensive hotel prices had driven the event north.
When Charlotte hosted its last tournament in 2019, local businesses brought in $43.7 million, beating the ACC Basketball Tournament by $7.1 million.
"Our tournament brings an amazing influx of fans to the city and our community-based activities create a memorable experience for all, with the game of basketball at the center," said CIAA Commissioner Jacqie McWilliams to CIAA.com.
At its best, 150,000 fans filled Charlotte's streets each year. Baltimore now hosts the tournament through 2026, with officials planning to choose the next host before that final tournament.
City Council member Malcolm Graham has signed the bid letter, showing official support. Both former Mayor Patrick Cannon and current Mayor Vi Lyles have backed the effort.
The tournament started in Washington, DC in 1946, then moved through Winston-Salem, Greensboro, and Norfolk before settling in Charlotte for 14 memorable years.
The CIAA includes 13 member schools across five states plus Washington D.C. Having its headquarters in Charlotte could help the city's chances.
While the details of the bid remain private, city officials are highlighting Charlotte's top-notch facilities and attractions. The next host city will be announced before Baltimore's final tournament in 2026.
