At the 41-minute mark, cameras show the outside of North Carolina's What-A-Burger. Then the scene jumps inside, where staff wear Texas Whataburger outfits. A customer asks for a "patty melt with white gravy" — a dish you can't get at the Carolina spot.
"This ain't just a continuity error, y'all. This is Texas propaganda. Plain and simple," said a viral Facebook post from The State You're In, according to the Charlotte Observer.
These two burger spots share nothing but a similar name. Last year's court battle saw the Texas chain sue several Carolina spots over naming rights.
The post spread fast, getting 200 shares and 100 comments from upset fans. "The original What-A-Burger was hijacked for this show!" one person wrote.
Unlike its Texas counterpart, the Carolina spot serves up local hits. Take the Witch Doctor, a fizzy mix with pickles, or their Cherry Lemon Sundrop. You won't spot these at any Texas chain.
Adding salt to the wound, the Texas chain plans to open 10 new spots near Charlotte. One will pop up right in Mooresville.
The menu at Carolina's What-A-Burger features classic items: burgers, dogs, rings, and hush puppies. Only Cook Out matches their prices and style in North Carolina.
This TV slip-up brought back old fights between the same-named spots. Yet the Carolina locations keep their own identity through special recipes and local touches that set them worlds apart from Texas.
