Michael Jordan pledged $10 million to Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington on Tuesday. He made this gift to honor his mother, Deloris Jordan. The medical center will rename its neuroscience institute after her — the Novant Health Deloris Jordan Neuroscience Institute.

This contribution pushes the NBA legend's total gifts to the Novant Health Foundation up to $27 million. The funds will expand neurological care across southeastern North Carolina and advance research into brain health.

"My mother taught me the importance of compassion and community, and I can't think of a better way to honor her than by helping to ensure those in need can obtain the most advanced neurological care available," the six-time NBA champion said in a statement.

Patients at the institute will receive treatment from expert physicians using advanced technology. Programs cover stroke, spine treatment, Alzheimer's diagnosis, Parkinson's disease, and other conditions affecting the brain and nervous system.

Deloris Jordan serves as founder and president of the James R. Jordan Foundation and its international foundation of the same name. She has directed programs in the U.S. and Africa that concentrate on health and wellness.

"I've always believed caring for others is one of life's greatest callings," Deloris Jordan said in the statement. "As a mother who raised my family in Wilmington, I know how access to quality care shapes a community."

She mentioned her interest in how neuroscience connects to well-being. Understanding the brain helps doctors care for the whole person, she explained.

This investment continues a partnership between the basketball star and Novant Health. It started with four Novant Health Michael Jordan Family Medical Clinics that opened earlier. These clinics provide primary and preventive care in underserved communities across Wilmington and Charlotte.

"We are deeply grateful for Michael's continued partnership and his unwavering commitment to expanding access to remarkable care and building a healthier future right here in Wilmington," said Carl Armato, president and chief executive officer of Novant Health. "The impact of his contributions to Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center and the legacy of the Novant Health Deloris Jordan Neuroscience Institute will be felt by families in this community for decades to come."

Officials will hold a dedication ceremony at the medical center in early 2026.
