Raycom Sports produced it with ESPN. The show marks the latest installment in the network's 'We're #1!' series.
Head coach Dean Smith entered the 1992-93 season without a national title in more than a decade. Duke had just won back-to-back championships, shifting the balance of power in college basketball. The Tar Heels rallied behind Smith to capture the program's third national championship that April.
The film includes archival footage along with first-person home videos shot by the late Eric Montross during the season. Game broadcasts, photographs and interviews round out the material.
Former players George Lynch, Brian Reese, Derrick Phelps, Donald Williams, Henrik Rodl, Kevin Salvadori, Matt Wenstrom, Pat Sullivan, Travis Stephenson, and Ed Geth appear in the documentary. Coaches and staff members Dave Hanners, Phil Ford, Steve Kirschner, and Ed Wills also share their stories.
Eric Montross' son Andrew and daughter Sarah contribute to the film. Opposing coaches Dave Odom from Wake Forest, Roy Williams from Kansas, and player Jimmy King from Michigan provide their perspectives. Broadcasters Jay Bilas and Mick Mixon round out the interview subjects.
The documentary traces key moments from the championship run. A 21-point comeback win over Florida State stands out as one turning point. The infamous Chris Webber timeout in the title game also appears.
The project honors the impact of Montross, Smith, and assistant coach Bill Guthridge. The bonds between players continue to define Carolina basketball, according to promotional materials.
Previous installments in the 'We're #1!' series covered Duke's 1991 and 1992 championship teams. The 1999 Florida State football squad that won the BCS national championship also received the documentary treatment in September 2023. The 1981 Clemson football team's championship season was another subject in the series.
