The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is warning Charlotte businesses about fraudulent purchases taking place. Fox 46 Charlotte reports that there is an uptick in stolen credit card numbers making large purchases. The FBI is warning all businesses to be aware of the activities. Fox 46 reports that there have been over 100 businesses in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, Alabama, Florida, West Virginia, and Kentucky have been targeted. According to the FBI, those businesses include tire stores, trailer businesses, lumber companies, and appliance and furniture stores. FBI agents say the purchases are typically over the phone. Sometimes, drivers are hired to pick up the items and the activity is not deemed fraudulent until days later. FBI Charlotte and local agencies are continuously working on the investigation. Fox 46 reports that more instances have likely gone unreported, but the investigation will continue.
