I Want My Mom Back: Life Of An Alzheimer’s Caretaker, Part 2
June is Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month. There are some 6.9 million Americans age 65 and older who are living with Alzheimer’s dementia. It’s a horrible, degenerative disease in which there is no cure. People who have Alzheimer’s are not the people their loved ones once knew. They can become withdrawn, quiet, child-like or completely opposite – loud, stubborn, irritable and even violent in some cases. It takes a lot to care for them. They are adults, but yet their minds are not; they are like toddlers. And I know this from experience. My mom suffers from Alzheimer’s Disease.
Nationwide, there are more than 11 million caregivers of people with Alzheimer’s Disease or other dementias.
But we don’t have to be in this journey alone. I’m happy to say the Alzheimer’s Association is a great resource and are a saving grace for many Alzheimer’s caregivers like me.
