Have you ever wondered how a town or city got its name? I had to explain to an out-of-town co-worker why Charlotte is called the Queen City and how that relates to the name Charlotte. I also feel like my dream job is being one of the people who name nail polish colors. Those are always hilarious puns. Or even the person who names the new streets. But with naming anyone or anything comes an amount of responsibility. A responsibility to not get it wrong. These towns, they may just have. That’s because they regretfully made the list of the most lewd towns in North Carolina.

This is strictly by the names and not reflective of anything residents may or may not do. The list actually comes from Thrillest who highlight the most lewd town names in each state. But they went further to inform us of some of the other towns that also fit the category. And in North Carolina, there were a total of 18 slightly inappropriately named towns. New York, West Virginia, and Minnesota were among the states that had more.

You’ll have to take your mind back to about 3rd or 4th grade if you want to truly appreciate this list. More specifically a 3rd or 4th grade boy. Some of the most head-scratching names from across the country are:

  • Cooter, Missouri
  • Weiner, Arkansas
  • Pee Pee Township, Ohio
  • Boody, Illinois
  • Butternuts, New York

But this is just a small sampling of the what were you thinking names. Most of these are small unincorporated areas, and towns, but there are a few larger cities and places you actually may have heard of. So keep reading to see the most lewd towns by name in North Carolina. Or you can learn more about towns across the country and read the full Thrillist list here.

  • Aho

    AHO

Aho is an unincorporated town in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. It’s located in Watauga County near another town on this list- Blowing Rock.

  • Blowing Rock

This one is a stretch for me. I see where they are coming from including it on the list, but perhaps I’ve just been to Blowing Rock so many times that I just don’t get that impression. Shameless plug to check out some of my favorite things to do in Blowing Rock here.

  • Butters

Traditional wrapped butter sticks on white background

Not many people choose to call Butters North Carolina home. Only about 100 residents in fact. But it is a town in Bladen County east of Lumberton.

  • Climax

    Climax

This was the one Thrillist determined was the most lewd name of all the NC towns. I’ve honestly got nothing else to say about the unincorporated community on the border of Guilford and Randolph county.

  • Coinjock

So what we are saying is we just ran out of names and random combinations of letters and settled on coin jock? And yes, it is real. Coinjock is a census-designated place in Currituck County, North Carolina.

  • Engelhard

    Englehard

You’ll find Engelhard on the coast on North Carolina. This fishing village is in the Lake Landing Township in Hyde County.

  • Forbush

    Forbush

I’m going out a limb here and guessing Forbush has a lot of bushes? Or they aspire to. It’s a township in Yadkin Valley (known for its wine), and there is even a Forbush High School.

  • Hobucken

    Hobucken

Hobucken is a small place in Pamlico County. At the last census, it’s population was 38. That’s a town where you truly know everyone! Hobucken is on TripAdvisor though so go Hobucken!

  • Hookerton

    Hookerton

You refer to a place as Hookerton and I have questions. And you have no right to think it wouldn’t end up on this list. It’s in Green County, NC and is actually the oldest town in the county. You can learn more on the town’s website.

  • Lizard Lick

Monitor lizard crawls forward with tongue out

Lizard Lick Towing had to be from somewhere and Lizard Lick the town is in Wake County. I want to visit just so I can tell someone I’m in Lizard Lick.

  • Love Valley

Red heart shaped sky at sunset. Beautiful landscape with road.Love background with copy space. Road to love

Love must be brewing in Love Valley, NC. Perhaps I should pay this authentic Western town near Statesville a visit. Learn more about visiting here.

  • Low Gap

Is there a low gap in low gap? It’s in the low gap of the Blue Ridge Mountains in the Franklin Township of Surry County, NC.

  • Mann’s Harbor

A view of Beverly, Mass. harbor at sunrise.

Mann’s Harbor is you guessed in a Harbor town in Dare County, NC. It’s just across the bridge on the mainland from Mateo and Roanoke Island.

  • Nags Head

NAGS HEAD, NC - SEPTEMBER 12: Ryan Volovlek heads out to enjoy the waves ahead of the arrival of Hurricane Florence on September 12, 2018 in Nags Head, North Carolina. Hurricane Florence is expected on Friday possibly as a category 4 storm along the Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina coastline.

You’ve probably heard of Nags Head a popular vacation destination on the Outer Banks. You can read the legend of how to the town got its name here.

  • Pee Dee

    Pee Dee

The name Pee Dee comes from the Native American tribe that lived at the site of the Town Creek Indian Mound. There is a town, national wildlife refuge, electric company, and more that carry on the name today. Learn more about the Pee Dee culture here.

  • Rhodhiss

    Rhodhiss

Rhodhiss is a peculiarly named town that recently celebrated its 120th anniversary. It sits on the border of Caldwell and Burke counties.

  • Roughedge

    Creeping fig on hedge fence

Does Roughedge have rough hedges? I’d like to think so. Roughedge is an unincorporated community in nearby Union County not far from Monroe.

  • Stumpy Point

Stump on green grass in the garden. Old tree stump in the summer park.

You’ll find Stumpy Point (which is just a depressing name for a place), along the north side of Stumpy Point Bay. It is also in the region of Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge in Dare County.
