Great Read For Kids And Families
Yesterday morning, Phil and I were discussing Christmas. I mentioned on-air that I grew up Jewish. My parents divorced when I was four years old, and my Dad remarried when I was six. The winter of 1976, we had our first Christmas tree. We only did it that year. My Dad and step-mom thought it would be good, since we were a blended family, to experience both holidays. We did Hanukkah AND Christmas that year, and I thought it was the coolest thing! I grew up in Gastonia, and there weren’t lots of Jewish kids in the community. I was one of the only kids that didn’t celebrate Christmas. It was kinda weird.
I received an email from a listener yesterday, Suzan Loeb. Suzan, who used to write for “The Charlotte Observer”, is the author of some children’s books that are about being a part of an interfaith family. These days, families are very different than they were in the 1970’s. I wish these books would have been around when I was a kid! The books are really cute, and helpful. They’d make a great gift for any child that’s part of an interfaith family. There are two books that Suzan has out. One is “The Elephant in the Room” and the other is “The Elephant in the Spring” Check out more information on both books here.
And Merry Christmas AND Happy Hanukkah! 🙂
