Columbus Day Will Soon Be Gone!
New Mexico is about to make a change.
New Mexico’s state Senate has voted to replace Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples Day.
The last step to make the change official is a signature from state governor Michelle Lujan Grisham. Several cities in the U.S. have made similar changes.
States like Vermont, Hawaii, Alaska and North Dakota also celebrate the holiday by recognizing the contributions of indigenous people, rather than those of Italian explorer Christoper Columbus.
12% of New Mexico’s population is Native American; that’s one of the main reasons the federal holiday was changed in the state.
But one state senator said the change “disrespects the Italian American community and the discrimination it’s faced.”
