Charlotte Mecklenburg Library to Close All Locations for Software Update in April
In spring 2025, Charlotte Mecklenburg Library will close all branches for a big tech upgrade. While buildings are shut down, people can still access digital books and media through online services.
Starting April 1, the library won’t give out cards or take hold requests. The mobile library stops running on April 13 and book returns end on April 18. When doors open on April 23, people will find a simpler book search system.
People who check out items after March 22 get twice the normal time, six weeks instead of three, to bring them back. The library will keep its no-fee rule for late materials.
Online access to accounts stops on April 11. After April 13, staff can only check out books that are actually on the shelves at each branch. Book drops start taking returns on April 21, just before the system comes back online.
This tech update is part of bigger growth plans. The library system will add 10 new locations, growing from 21 to 31 buildings, bringing books closer to areas that need them.
Work continues on a stunning main branch, set to open in 2026. The six-floor Tryon Street building will have community spaces, places to eat, and creative workshops. By May 5, the new system should be working fully. The new software should help staff work better and give readers more control over their library activities.
During the changeover, library card holders can still use Libby, Hoopla, and other digital services for reading and streaming. A basic book search will work when branches open again.
