Throwback Video of the Week: INXS “Never Tear Us Apart”
By 1987, there was no question that INXS had made it. The Austrian group’s sixth studio album, Kick, was a worldwide bestseller with plenty of radio-friendly tracks.
The fourth single from that album was the bluesy ballad “Never Tear Us Apart.” With music by keyboardist Andrew Farriss and lyrics by lead singer Michael Hutchence, the song reached #7 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1988.
The song clearly meant a lot to INXS. At Michael Hutchence’s funeral in 1997, “Never Tear Us Apart” was played as his coffin was carried out of St Andrew’s Cathedral in Sydney by his younger brother, Rhett, and the remaining band members.
The music video for the song features an extended intro. It was filmed in Prague as communism was crumbling in the former Czechoslovakia. The beautiful old city is as much a star of the video as is INXS. They also filmed the videos for “Guns in the Sky” and “New Sensation” there.
