It has been more than a decade since we lost the great Whitney Houston. In her all too short 48 years, Houston soared from the church choir to the top of the Billboard charts. And not just once. She famously dominated the mid-1980s with seven number 1 hit singles in a row. Those were followed by several more in the 1990s.

On what would have been Whitney Houston’s 60th birthday (8/9/23), the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio, unveiled a new artifact from the late superstar’s personal collection. According to Fox 8, a red jacket designed and created by Whitney, with the help of fashion designer Marc Bouwer, is now on display in the Legends of Rock exhibit. The jacket is embroidered with the song titles from Houston’s 1990 album, I’m Your Baby Tonight. You can see it HERE.

Whitney Houston’s life was tragically cut short by the demons of addiction in 2012. The singer and actress was posthumously enshrined by the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2020. Houston’s true legacy is her enduring musical inspiration that has touched so many other lives.

For this edition of the Throwback Threesome, let’s remember Whitney at her best with three of those seven consecutive chart-toppers. We’ll start with “How Will I Know” from Houston’s 1985 debut album, followed by “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” and “So Emotional” from her 1987 follow-up.

Throwback Threesome: Whitney Houston

  • How Will I Know (1985)

Released as the third single from Whitney Houston’s self-titled debut album, “How Will I Know” was originally intended for Janet Jackson, who never recorded it. The song became Houston’s second of seven number 1 hits in a row on the Billboard Hot 100. Houston’s label mate and family friend, Aretha Franklin, has a black-and-white cameo appearance in the otherwise very colorful music video. It won Best Female Video at the 1986 MTV Video Music Awards.

  • I Wanna Dance With Somebody (1987)

Whitney Houston’s streak of consecutive number 1 hits continued with “I Wanna Dance With Somebody,” the lead single from her second album, Whitney. As of May 2023, the remastered 4K video had over 399 million views on YouTube, making it the fifth most watched music video by a female artist released in the 1980s behind Cyndi Lauper’s “Time After Time,” Madonna’s “La Isla Bonita,” Bonnie Tyler’s “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” and Lauper’s “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun,” respectively.

  • So Emotional (1987)

Another chart-topper for the amazing Whitney Houston! “So Emotional” was the third single from Whitney’s second album and her sixth consecutive number 1 hit in the 1980s. The music video shows Whitney preparing for a concert on her 1987-1988 Moment of Truth Tour. It was filmed at Lehigh University’s Stabler Arena in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
