Throwback Video Of The Week: Joe Jackson “Steppin’ Out”
Remember going out at night? That was fun, especially when we were younger. Of course, no one is going out now due to the pandemic, so our kids can’t really make fun of us for wanting to stay home on a Saturday night. Still, it would be nice to have the option of putting on some nice clothes and hitting the town.
Following a divorce, English musician Joe Jackson spent a few years living in New York City during the 1980s. The nightlife and energy of Manhattan inspired his 1982 hit, “Steppin’ Out.” Growing up around the city, I heard the song everywhere, from radio to local TV promos to elevators. To this day, “Steppin’ Out” always transports me back to the Big Apple.
According to Songfacts, the video for “Steppin’ Out” was filmed in one night at Manhattan’s St. Regis Hotel. It appears that director Steve Barron (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Coneheads) took a page from a classic fairy tale with a hotel housekeeper imagining herself as a big city Cinderella.
