Carolina Gamer Spotlight: Meet Kouri Evans
Video games are all the rage, so we decided to shed some light on local video game stars in the Carolinas. This week, we had the chance to sit down with local community gamer, Kouri Evans, and ask him about being part of the gaming community! Fun fact: Kouri is also a student currently at Johnson C. Smith University here in Charlotte, North Carolina!
1. How’d you get into gaming? What was the original goal?
I got into gaming at the age of 7 when I got a Nintendo DS. I had a couple of games for it like pokemon, Mario Kart, Super Mario 64, etc. Eventually leading onto playing the game cube when the hottest game out was Super Smash Bros. By the time I turned 14 I got my first Xbox 360 and it was a start-up for me to start grinding in games that I really wanted to play like Call of Duty for instance. Around this time in 2014 Call of Duty was getting big with tournaments and stuff. I remember watching the tournaments every day on youtube for hours watching them play and how they move and understanding good tips and tricks and strategies on how to get better at the game, which motivates me to perfect my craft in Call of duty. The original goal when I started playing video games was that I wanted to be a professional gamer and join a good E-sports team and that’s still my goal to this day.
2. What’s been your best moment as a gamer?
My best moment I would have to say would be having an E-sports team and program at my university. I feel like this is gonna get my foot in the door for Professionals to look at my skills and get a perspective and get a chance to talk to different gamers like myself and get to know them.
3. What games really speak to you?
Games that speak to me are First-person shooter games and Battle royal games pique my interest the most.
4. What advice would you give to aspiring gamers?
Some advice I would give is that you need to follow your dreams if you’re passionate about gaming keep grinding in whatever game you choose to play and be active in it. LIke play for hours and hours a day and just get better and get your skill up.
5. What’s been one of the biggest surprises that you never thought of going into gaming?
One of the biggest surprises will be that without gaming I believe that I wouldn’t be in the position I am in today without gaming. Gaming has played a big part in my life dealing with issues and other circumstances that occurred during those times.
