Throwback Video Of The Week: Backstreet Boys “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back)”
If you’ve always thought this music video must have been inspired by Michael Jackson’s “Thriller,” you’re correct. Released as a single in the summer of 1997, the Backstreet Boys’ “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back)” was a big hit around the world. The video went on to win ‘Best Group Video’ at the MTV Video Music Awards and ‘Peoples Choice Favorite International Group’ at Canada’s MuchMusic Video Awards, both in 1998.
After the Backstreet Boys’ tour bus breaks down, their driver suggests the group spend the night at a nearby house of the haunted variety while he goes for help. Fun Fact #1: The bus driver is played by Antonio Fargas, who was ‘Huggy Bear’ on the original Starsky & Hutch TV series. Fun Fact #2: The house is the same one from the 1995 movie Casper.
In a creepy and choreographed dream sequence, the boy band is transformed into iconic horror movie characters. Brian becomes a werewolf; Howie turns into a vampire; Nick is a mummy; A.J. appears as the Phantom of the Opera; and Kevin is simultaneously Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Upon awakening, the Backstreet Boys discover that their bus driver has undergone his own transformation.
