Throwback Video Of The Week: Scandal “The Warrior”
Scandal isn’t the most well-known band of the 1980s, but there are some interesting stories attached to the group. Did you know that Jon Bon Jovi briefly played guitar for Scandal in 1983? And that Van Halen wanted to replace David Lee Roth with Scandal’s lead singer Patty Smyth? Or that Patty has been married to tennis great John McEnroe since 1997? That’s him on guitar in the photo above.
During their initial incarnation from 1981 to 1985, Scandal had a handful of hits, the biggest of which was “The Warrior.” It topped the U.S. Mainstream Rock chart in 1984 and, decades later, was used the theme song for the Netflix series GLOW, about the female professional wrestling league of the mid-80s.
The song is far better than the video. Patty Smyth put it best in the book I Want My MTV, saying,”When I saw the video, I was crestfallen. I had no idea it would look like an off-Broadway production of Cats.” To be fair, it has a little Phantom of the Opera and Cirque du Soleil in it, too.
