Adulting Ain’t That Fun
Remember when you were in middle school and you couldn’t wait to grow up? You hated being told what to do and you laid in bed at night dreaming about being an adult. You told yourself how you would have your own house and a great job and buy everything your heart desired. You would travel the world, stay up all night and eat junk food for dinner. The phrase, “be careful what you wish for comes to mind.” For some reason we had this picture in our heads that when you grew you’d find the love of your life, have a nice house in the suburbs and live a boss life, and you still can.
What does it mean to be an adult and pull your own weight in life, though? Unfortunately, it seems we have built an educational system that teaches people to be book smart, score high on tests, and graduate from college, but still lack basic life skills and common sense. Can I get an Amen?! What we need are classes on budgeting money, how to gain and keep a good credit score and don’t forget how to get out a stain and separate whites and colors when doing laundry. We need to learn how to make $100 last for a week and how to juggle work, play and sleep.
Growing up is hard to define and is certainly not related to age. It involves finding your purpose, taking responsibility for your actions, not always pointing the finger at others, and learning to be humble. It involves thinking for yourself, and forming your own opinions while still being mindful of others. Unfortunately, we do not have the option to fly to Neverland and never grow up. Growing up is not easy and it takes some longer than others. What do you think? Should schools incorporate some life classes instead of just teaching the same curriculum?
