Throwback Video Of The Week: Eric Carmen “Hungry Eyes”
After a successful stint as lead singer of Raspberries in the 1970s, Eric Carmen embarked on his solo career. He hit the charts with “All by Myself,” “Never Gonna Fall in Love Again,” “She Did It,” and “Make Me Lose Control.” But none of his singles has endured like the one he recorded for the 1987 movie Dirty Dancing.
“Hungry Eyes” was originally recorded by Frankie and The Knockouts for their 1984 album Makin’ the Point. When Eric Carmen was asked to sing it for Dirty Dancing, he was hesitant because he believed that soundtrack music suffered “horrible deaths.” I guess it depends on the movie. Dirty Dancing was a box office smash and “Hungry Eyes” continues to enjoy frequent radio airplay. The song has also been used in some TV commercials and even showed up in the 2016 animated film Sausage Party.
When putting together the video for “Hungry Eyes,” the director made sure to include plenty of steamy scenes from Dirty Dancing. But it’s not all Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey. Eric Carmen gets his fair share of screen time, too.
