North Carolina Has Drawn It’s First Vaccine Lottery Winner
North Carolina officials drew the first vaccine lottery winner. In an effort to encourage people to get the COVID-19 vaccine Governor Cooper offered up cash incentives. The first drawing for one of four $1 million cash prizes happened Wednesday morning at 10 a.m. The winner, who hasn’t been identified yet, was chosen by a random number generator. The NCDHHS will then identify the individual who corresponds with the number. Once that is done the winner eligibility must be checked and the winner contacted. Once that individual gives consent their identity will be released. Officials believe this could take a few days.
All North Carolina residents 18 or older who have received at least one vaccine shot from a health care provider affiliated with the state’s Coronavirus Vaccine Management System are entered to win. All these individuals were assigned a unique number corresponding to their vaccination. The North Carolina Education Lottery officials use a randomized number generator to select the winning number along with several alternates.
The 3 additional drawings will take place July 7, July 21, and August 4.
Additionally, four “Summer Cash 4 College” drawings also will be held for students ages 12 to 17. Those who have received at least one dose of the vaccine are eligible to win $125,000 scholarships to the college of their choice.
The incentives don’t seem to be having the desired impact with vaccination rates still pacing below where officials hoped they would be. Maybe after seeing this first vaccine lottery winner more people will step up.
