Throwback Video Of The Week: Rupert Holmes “Escape (The Piña Colada Song)”
Rupert Holmes, born David Goldstein in England, is a man of many talents. He has written Broadway musicals, a movie, a television series, and a mystery novel. Despite his many accomplishments, Rupert Holmes will always be best remembered for his 1979 hit about two dissatisfied lovers who find each other all over again in the personal ads.
“Escape (The Piña Colada Song)” was released in 1979 and topped the pop charts in the U.S. and Canada. It’s still one of the definitive Yacht Rock songs. The clip below comes from an episode of “The Midnight Special” in 1980. Rupert Holmes is introduced by none other than the Village People.
