Moment With Mel: 40 Years Of Friendship
Over the weekend I was at the beach with my closest girlfriends. Every year we get together for a long weekend. We hang out on the beach, have some cocktails, and giggle. It’s something we all need! This past weekend we realized we’ve known each other for 40 years. It doesn’t seem that long, nor do we feel that old, but it’s been 40 years!
We became friends in the 7th grade. We’ve been through crushes, boyfriends, and heartache. As adults we’ve dealt with divorces, infidelity, anxiety, depression, serious medical issues, and deaths. The laughs we’ve had are unmeasurable. A few of us went through a rebellious stage as teens and got in trouble together lots. I can’t count the number of times I was grounded in high school! And looking back, every time it was worth it. The memories we’ve made together are forever.
Although we’ve all changed, our core personalities are still the same. In high school, we each had a role. One of my friends was the ‘mama’ of the group and 40 years later, she still is!
Our weekend was spent eating fattening food, drinking, and laughing. These ladies are the ones I can truly be myself around. There is no judgement, only unconditional love. I am beyond lucky that I still have these women in my life.
I still remember things that happened when we were 13 years old. It doesn’t seem like it’s been 40 years! All my friends have kids that are now in college or have graduated. Soon they’ll be grandparents. One of my friends is retiring from teaching in December. I remember the day we met in 7th grade!
There were years we drifted apart. Life does that. But when we are together it still feels like 1983 all over again! Laughing and sharing memories is good for the soul. 40 years! Hoping we’ll still be enjoying these trips at 50 years!
