Charlotte’s First ‘More Than Pink Walk’ October 8
October is ‘Breast Cancer Awareness Month’ and many of you have heard me on-air encourage you to get a mammogram. And I’ll continue to do so! I only missed a year due to Covid. When I went in 2021, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I am so very lucky that my cancer was detected early. A mammogram saved me and my boob!
Most of us are familiar with the Susan G. Komen ‘Race For a Cure’ event. This year, the walk is a bit different. On Saturday, October 8, the inaugural ‘More than Pink Walk’ will happen in uptown Charlotte. Organizers say the change will allow more inclusiveness so that everyone can participate.
According to WCNC, the day will include the Parade of Hope, a Family Fun Zone, and folks will have access to resources on where to go for help. When you’re diagnosed with breast cancer, so many things swirl around in your mind. It’s a lot to take in. At the walk, patient navigators will be available to answer questions and provide resources for those that are dealing with breast cancer.
When I was going through breast cancer, I had a breast cancer navigator that called me and emailed me weekly. Oddly enough, the person that was my navigator was a neighbor of mine when I was a kid. How wild is that?! It helped my anxiety knowing there was someone I could go to with questions or concerns.
There is so much to think about once you receive a cancer diagnosis. Figuring out how to pay for treatment shouldn’t be something a patient needs to stress over. This walk will help raise funds so that women and men don’t need to worry about that. Dealing with the cancer and getting better is really all a patient should worry about!
Participation in the “More Than Pink Walk” is free, but those who raise at least 100 dollars will get an event T-shirt. Fundraising through the event will also go towards Komen’s financial assistance program.
Unfortunately, this year I’m dealing with some other health issues. But next year I want to get a team together to walk in the event. I’m one of the lucky ones, and I want to help others. It’s stunning how common breast cancer is. Just last week, someone on Facebook hit me up, asking me about treatment. She was recently diagnosed with breast cancer and wanted me to fill her in on what she could expect. I’m glad people feel comfortable asking me questions, and I’m so glad I’m around to help others!
If you haven’t already done so, please schedule a mammogram asap. If you have any questions about where to get one for free, here’s some info. And I’m always here if you need a buddy or someone to talk to. It’s a scary journey, but you don’t have to do it alone.
