Beloved Charlotte Restaurant Gus’ Sir Beef Closing
Many years ago, when I decided to go back to college for the last time, I lived with my mom in Charlotte. She had a house in the Cotswold area and I commuted to UNCC. My mom is the one that introduced me to the restaurant Gus’ Sir Beef and we’d go often. It was the first place I knew that served a ‘meat and three’ and it was the first place I tried fried squash. To date, fried squash is one of my favorite things! When I saw that the restaurant was closing, it made me sad.
Gus’s Sir Beef has been a Charlotte staple for more than 50 years. And the location has always been at the corner of Monroe Road at North Wendover. As Charlotte has grown, that corner of town has become difficult to get in and out of. Because of that, it’s been a long time since I’ve eaten there. Still, it sucks that it’s closing down.
According to WSOC, the iconic restaurant announced Monday that it is closing down for good. According to the restaurant’s Facebook page, the closing is happening immediately. In the post, the owner mentions COVID and costly building repairs as the reason for the closing.
Gus and Calliope Bacogeorge opened the restaurant in 1957 offering ‘fresh my farm’ vegetables and home cooked meals. For the last 20 plus years, the children have run the restaurant.
Although I haven’t been there in years, I hate to see it go. It’s another piece of Charlotte history that’s going away. And for me it’s a place where my mom and I would connect and enjoy some delicious food. Nostalgia is a powerful thing.
Thanks to the family for giving me memories and for introducing me to what is still one of my favorite foods: fried squash. Gus’ Sir Beef had the best! I know many folks in Charlotte will miss the restaurant.
Always sad to see another #Charlotte institution close for good. https://t.co/aqKDxrJsHU
