Moment With Mel: Perfect Pool Day With No Phone Means Lots Of Laughs
For the first time in a long time, I had a fun weekend! Saturday, I went to a pool party and got to see a lot of ladies that I went to high school with and the day was perfect! Since COVID, my neck surgeries, and dealing with breast cancer, I really haven’t gone out a lot. I see my friends once in a while, but I think because I’ve declined so many invites, folks aren’t inviting me to as many things. Which is understandable! It’s just taken me a bit to socialize again.
My self-confidence is not at its highest since I’ve gained a lot of weight the last few years. Yes, I know I’ve had other issues that I’ve been dealing with. I’m also aware that I’m lucky to be alive. In addition, I know that one’s weight has nothing to do with the person they are. I’m now trying to exercise again, but I have to go slow. I’m trying to build my confidence. Hanging out with some amazing women that I haven’t seen in years was good for my soul.
Most of the women at the party are a year younger than me. We all got along in school, and would go to the same parties, but we really don’t hang out now. I still hang out with ‘my group’ of girls, but since this group is younger, we run in different circles. It was so good to talk, laugh, and enjoy some drinks in the sunshine. Since I haven’t seen many of these ladies in a long time, I truly enjoyed chatting with them and finding out about their lives now. The entire time I was at the party, I didn’t look at my phone.
We’re all so connected to our phones! At work, we all have to have our phones in order to log into our station computers. When cell phones first became popular, I got one but I wasn’t keen on never being able to get away from people. LOL! In the 70’s and 80’s, we didn’t have cell phones. When someone called your house and you weren’t home, that was it! No one was able to get in touch with you. Sometimes I miss that.
I’m like everyone else; I’m on my phone numerous times a day, scrolling through social media, texting, and playing games. While at the party Saturday, I didn’t even think of looking at my phone. I truly enjoyed catching up with everyone and having fun.
I’m going to the beach in two weeks for a long weekend with the girls I’ve been friends with for the past 40 years. We try to have a girl’s weekend at least once a year. Usually, when we hit the beach, I’ll bring my phone. This year, I’m going to leave it in my purse and forget about it. We all need time to just connect with each other and laugh.
Thank you to my friend Julie for the invite on Saturday. It was a needed good time!
And if you are in need of a great, tasty appetizer to bring to a party, I made a pickle dip Saturday that rocks! I altered the recipe I found on Pinterest. I used dill and bread and butter pickles, Greek yogurt in addition to the cream cheese, green onions instead of red, and I added some red pepper. It went quick!
