South Carolina Tax-Free Weekend Coming Up, And It’s A Great Time To Shop For Back-To-School
Although it seems crazy, back-to-school is not that far away. August is quickly approaching, and most of the area’s schools will start back within the next few weeks. If you have kids or if you’re just looking to save some money, South Carolina is having their tax-free weekend soon.
According to WACH in Columbia, August 4-August 6 is South Carolina’s Tax-Free Weekend for 2023. During that weekend, certain items will be exempt from taxes. The tax-free weekend began in 2000 to help provide some relief to families before the school year begins. During this weekend, all eligible items that are purchased online and in-store will not include the state’s 6% sales tax or any other local sales taxes.
According to the law, stores with eligible items can’t opt out of the holiday. Every year, there’s a list of what is exempt and what is not exempt.
Items exempt from state and local sales taxes during Tax-Free Weekend include:
- Clothing and clothing accessories like hats, scarves, hosiery and handbags (new or used)
- Footwear
- School Supplies including pens, pencils, paper, binders, notebooks, books, bookbags, lunchboxes and calculators.
- Computers,
- printers and printer supplies
- computer software
- Bed and bath supplies like bath washcloths, blankets, bedspreads, bed linens, sheet sets, comforter sets, bath towels, shower curtains, bath rugs, mats, pillows and pillowcases.
Those items that are not exempt include:
- Jewelry and watches
- Cosmetics and eyewear
- Watches
- Furniture
- Items placed on layaway or deferred payment and delivery plans
- Rented clothing or footwear
- A sale or lease of an item for use in a trade or business
Because South Carolina is just a quick drive from Charlotte, it might be worth it to go across the line in order to save some money. You can see all of the items that are exempt from taxes and all that are not here. Happy shopping!
