Charlotte’s Yiasou Greek Festival Back This September For Its 45th Year
I love some Greek food! Years ago, when I did mornings on a radio station in Columbia, S.C., I’d be at the Greek festival there early in the morning. I’d be broadcasting live while eating freshly cooked Greek chicken and yummy Baklava. Good times! Of course, Charlotte has an amazing Greek festival every year and it’s coming back for its 45th year this September.
According to Axios Charlotte, Charlotte’s Yiasou Greek Festival is returning to Dilworth beginning September 8 and going thru the 10. As always, the fun festival will happen at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral on East Boulevard. Not only is this year the festivals 45th year, it’s also the 100-year anniversary of the church.
If you’ve never been to this festival, it’s amazing! There’s delicious foods, lots of entertainment and performances, and tons of vendors so you can get some shopping in. The festival usually draws a crowd of around 40,000 each year, so it’s quite popular.
Personally, I think the food is the true star of the festival. Some of the dishes you’ll be able to try are souvlaki, Greek pizza, baklava, baked chicken and one of my favorite things, Spanakopita. The festival offers a full sit down meal inside, while outside you can grab a la carte items. And as in years past, if you want some food to go, they’ll have their drive-thru on Winthrop Ave. between East Blvd. and Worthington Ave.
Sometimes just before the festival begins, a church member will bring boxes of pastries for us here at the station. SO good! I’m not sure of the Greek name for them, but they have some almond cookies that rock! I always make sure I grab one or two quick!
The festival tickets are only $5, and admission is free for kids under 12. If this will be your first time, the event takes place at 600 East Blvd. Parking can be tricky so you may want to take the light rail to the East/West Boulevard station. It’s less than a mile walk from there.
The dates are set for the next Greek festival. https://t.co/RIqD7TLMm8
