Carolina Panthers Fire Head Coach Frank Reich
Well, we all knew it would probably happen. Personally, I thought it would be at the end of the season though. After this weekend’s loss to the Tennessee Titans, Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper has fired first-year head coach Frank Reich. The team is now 1-10 after losing to the Titans 17-10 over the weekend.
According to WCNC, Tepper made the announcement earlier this morning. Reports are saying that Tepper yelled ‘F—‘ in the locker room Sunday after the Titans game. And if you’re a fan of the team, you get all the frustration. Since Tepper bought the team in 2018, the Panthers have been struggling. Now, I’m no football expert, but it seems like other choices could have been made in regard to coaching.
Last year, the team did poorly, leading Tepper to fire then coach Matt Rhule. Now, Reich is gone. According to the announcement Tepper made on X, Special Teams Coordinator Chris Tabor will be serving as interim head coach. Of course, at this point in the season, I’m not sure it really matters who is doing the coaching.
Many fans in our area think that Steve Wilks should have been named head coach instead of Reich. He was interim coach after Rhule was fired and lead the team to a 6-6 record. It was a bit shocking that he wasn’t promoted to head coach earlier this year. Yes, Reich has lots of experience and was the first quarterback in Panthers’ franchise history in 1995. In addition, when he was coaching the Indianapolis Colts, he took the team to the playoffs twice. Yet he was unable to make things work here in Charlotte.
Who’s To Blame For The Team’s Record
Again, I’m no football expert, but I know many folks think Tepper is to blame for the team’s bad showing the last few years. When starting any new job, workforce experts usually say it takes six months to a year to get adjusted and be successful. Does the same idea apply to football? Reich was the new head coach for this season, working with some new talent, including Bryce Young. From what I know about Young, he has an enormous amount of talent.
Some people are saying that Tepper’s ‘knee jerk’ reaction to the losses the last two years isn’t giving the team an opportunity to develop. Again, it takes time. Time for players to develop, time for coaches to turn a team into a winning one. If you hit social media, you can see lots of folks are unhappy with Tepper’s decision, and decisions regarding the team the last few years.
