New York Style Deli Opening In Charlotte This Week And I’m Excited
Before I tell you about the new deli opening up this week here in Charlotte, let me say that I do not know Larry Schreiber or the Schreiber family, but I’m hoping to! Being Jewish with a father from New York, I’m a HUGE fan of an authentic New York style deli. And that’s what’s opening up in town this week.
According to WSOC, Larry Schreiber, the chef behind Bao and Broth, is opening a second concept in Optimist Hall. The new venture, Schreiber’s on Rye, will be opening this Thursday, December 21. The new spot will be serving amazing sandwiches, drawing from both Jewish and Italian influences. THIS is my kind of place! My two favorites!
If you’ve listened to Phil and me, you know I’m a big fan of a sandwich. You can never underestimate the power of a great sandwich! If you’ve ever seen the show ’30 Rock’, I’m like Liz Lemon. If you’re thinking that you can’t mess up a sandwich, you’re wrong! There’s an art to sandwich making!
What Will Shreiber’s on Rye Be Serving
WSOC chatted with Schreiber about the menu and old school New York deli sandwiches will be the focus. For example, ‘The Lower East Side’ features a half-pound of hot corned beef and deli mustard, served on seedless rye bread. Yes! A sandwich as big as my head! That’s what I’m talking about. Other offerings are ‘The Hot Dog’ with your choice of toppings and an Italian sandwich called ‘The Mulbery’.
The sandwiches have me ready, but I’m really excited about the ‘Opa’s Matzo Ball Soup.’ This soup takes skill to make! My mom makes amazing Matzo Ball Soup, and years ago a deli out near the Arboretum Shopping Center called Katz Deli served great Matzo Ball Soup. I’ve tried it at a few other spots in Charlotte, and it’s not the real deal. One bagel shop, I won’t name the shop, has awesome bagels but I’m pretty sure their Matzo Ball Soup is Progresso Chicken Noodle Soup with some Matzo balls. Not authentic at all!
Classic deli sides will be available to go along with sandwiches and I’m hoping there will be a big Black & White Cookie available too! That would make it perfect! If anyone who knows the Schreiber’s reads this, tell them if they’re looking for a spokesperson, I’m in! LOL!
Schreiber’s on Rye will be open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday. You can find them in Optimist Hall, between Boxcar Betty’s and Collier Candy Company. Find out more details and see more menu items here.
