The Most ‘Unforgettable’ Road Trips Inspired by Famous Books
It’s easy to get lost in a book. Books can describe any place on earth. It really helps when the author writes the little details that mentally transport you to places that you may never have visited. But sometimes you just want to see these places in person. And in many cases, you can. Best Life, a lifestyle magazine compiled a list of the “most unforgettable” road trips inspired by famous books.

I was excited to see Twilight kick off their list. I’ll admit, I didn’t really get into that series until years after it came out. In the Twilight saga, Forks, Washington, isn’t just a backdrop. It’s practically a character itself. With its nearly constant rain and minimal sunlight, it’s the ultimate hideaway for the vampire clan, the Cullens, to blend in. If you’re dreaming of strolling through Bella and Edward’s stomping grounds? It’s a real place.
The outlet mentions that you can stay in Bella Swan’s home in the Pacific Northwest but they didn’t mention the details. Luckily, I saw something about it not too long ago. The Twilight Swan House is actually listed on Airbnb. “Sleep in Bella’s bedroom! Team Edward?–Sleep in the ‘lookout’ room, overlooking the front yard, which is where Bella looks out the window to see Edward parked. Team Jacob?–Sleep in the ‘Jacob Black guest room,’ located off the main entry downstairs,” the space description says.
In the surrounding area, you can see the waterfall from the famous baseball scene at Multnomah Falls in the Columbia River Gorge and reenact the chase scenes in the forests of Silver Falls State Park.
Chances are you have come across F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic The Great Gatsby. The story unfolds within the backdrop of 1920s New York City. Fitzgerald opted for the fictional names East and West Egg instead of the actual Cow Neck and Great Neck peninsulas on Long Island. The good news is that you can drive through inspiration spots. “Feel like you’re visiting the Buchanan home and Jay Gatsby’s mansion, then drive into New York City (just like our protagonist, Nick, does several times),” mentioned the outlet.
The lifestyle magazine mentions other road trips inspired by famous books such as Their Eyes Were Watching God is set primarily in Florida, On the Road, Jack Kerouac’s novel that’s actually about a road trip cross-country, and others.
I’m surprised they missed out on books like The Fault In Our Stars, Eat, Pray, Love, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, and others. Maybe, they decided to stick to places within the U.S. But a road trip throughout another country would be a dream come true. Think about it, some of these places would send you on a road trip journey to places like New Zealand, Italy, Thailand, and more.
