15 ‘Weird’ Southern Sandwiches And Some Of These I Don’t Get
Despite my Northern attitude, I was born in Gastonia, North Carolina and have lived here most of my life. However, there are some Southern foods I just don’t get. Granted, my father is from New York and my step-mother was from England, so growing up we didn’t eat lots of Southern food. But I grew up here, so I have lots of friends that are also from the South, and some of these ‘weird’ sandwiches I’ve never heard of or seen in my life!
According to Southern Living, there are 15 ‘Weird’ Southern Sandwiches that folks in the South will never stop making. So we need to get into these. Now the first sandwich listed is a Southern Tomato Sandwich. I love these! This is the time of the year where you can get fresh, homegrown tomatoes and there’s nothing better! Personally, I love Heirloom tomatoes. They have a sweetness to them. We all know to have a solid, Southern, tomato sandwich you need a homegrown matter, mayo, salt, pepper, and white bread. That’s it!
If you’re like me and have tried to make this sandwich on other types of bread, you know it’s not the same. White bread is the only way to go! I realize Dukes Mayo is the go-to here, but I’ll admit that I use Hellman’s. My mom uses it, so growing up that’s what we had. And to me, it’s the only one to use.
The second sandwich is the one that got my attention because it’s odd and I’ve never seen anyone eat it. Have you ever had a Pineapple Sandwich? Now, I love some pineapple but in a sandwich with mayo? Noooo! But that’s what this sandwich is. White bread, pineapple, and mayo. According to the article, some folks add cheese to the sandwich, while others add a fried egg. Nope. I’m out on this one!
Funeral sandwiches are on the list, but I’ve had these. I just call them ham and cheese sliders. Usually, I make them with small onion rolls. They’re great for a party! The Peanut Butter and Banana Sandwich is also on the list. This one isn’t that odd. Not one of my favorites, but I get this one. Now the mayo, banana and peanut butter one I don’t get. Yuck!
Most of the other sandwiches aren’t that ‘weird’ to me. Egg salad is yummy, fried bologna on a sandwich is tasty once in a while, and a cucumber sandwich is festive in the summer since it’s light. Using a homegrown cucumber is the best!
The Mayo Sandwich and the Sweet Onion Sandwich is ‘weird’ to me! I love a sweet Vidalia onion and I like onion on a hoagie or Italian sub. However, just onion and mayo on white bread is too much. I love all kinds of onions but having them solo on a sandwich doesn’t sound tasty to me.
