North Carolina City Named No. 1 in America for Black Families in 2023

Plenty of people are contemplating a big life change this new year. Getting married, having kids, and starting your own family can cause you to want to relocate to a new city. As an African American woman, I know that finding the perfect city for my family to feel welcomed and at home is very important. In any city I have ever lived, I always try to make sure I am in an area that has a good bit of people and things that I can relate to.

Many black families check neighborhoods to have a good amount of black children for their kids to play with or schools that are diverse enough for their children. Finding the right city to grow in with your family can be a big deal for upcoming black families in America. That Sister has put together a list of the best cities in America for black families in 2023. From job opportunities to cultural representation, these 10 cities make the most sense for black families. Lucky for us, one North Carolina city is the No. 1 city for black families in 2023. Keep reading to find out which one!

  • 5. San Antonio, Texas

    Surprisingly for some, San Antonio came in at No. 5 on the list. I have traveled to San Antonio many times, it is a pretty diverse city and is also one of Texas’s biggest cities. Although they do probably have a higher percentage of Hispanic families, there are tons of Black families in the area as well. San Antonio is also filled with many military families as there are several bases surrounding the area. There are tons of festivals and cultures that live within San Antonio.

  • 4. Lansing, Michigan

    Well, looks like Michigan may be a go-to as well. Lansing is recognized as one of the best places for black families in the entire world. It was named one of the best places for African Americans and truly embraces diversity overall. Currently, Lansing’s unemployment rate is at its lowest in 15 years. So, not only is it good the family but also possibly for your career. As great as it may be, it is also one of the smaller cities on the top of the list.

  • 3. Richmond, Virginia

    This one does not surprise me as much. I have heard great things about Richmond and know quite a few people that are from there, who are Black. Richmond is probably a great place for any family due to the many things to do in the area. From tons of festivals, great food, and overall safety. Black families can also expect some great representation when living in the Richmond area.

  • 2. Orlando, Florida

    Coming in at No. 2 is Orlando, Florida. Home to Mickey Mouse is also one of the best places for Black families. Orlando is a huge melting pot of cultures and people and their diversity is pretty through the roof. Connect with African Americans, but also Black people from other cultures such as Jamaicans, Haitians, and other Caribbean cultures. It also doesn’t hurt that you can enjoy a great housing market and tons of job opportunities.

  • 1. Raleigh, North Carolina

    Coming in at No. 1 is North Carolina! Whoot, whoot. Raleigh is taking over as one of the most diverse cities in the entire state. There are tons of things to do for the entire family, great job opportunities, fantastic schools, and plenty of people from different backgrounds. I have family in Raleigh and can 100% see why it is so far up on this list.
