The Best and Worst Purchases To Make In January

  • What To Buy In January

  • Beauty Gift Sets

During the holiday season, beauty retailers and department stores stockpile exclusive gift sets. Most of the products are the same you’ll see all year long, but they come in festive packaging or smaller samples. If you don’t mind the holiday packaging you can get great deals on the items and stock up for the year ahead.

  • Bedding & Sheets

Household linens including sheets, blankets, and towels, typically go on sale in January, stemming from “White Sales” – the tradition of department stores marking down linens early in the year. These will be some of the best prices you’ll find throughout the year.

  • Fitness Equipment and Gym Memberships

Let’s face it most people say they are going to start working out in the new year. At retailers are ready to take full advantage of that. Not only will you find gyms and fitness training facilities offering special rates to new members in January, but you’ll find a number of deals on exercise equipment (large and small).

  • Winter Apparel

Shopping over the three-day Martin Luther King Jr. Day long weekend will get you considerable markdowns on winter clothing at retailers like Kohl’s, Macy’s, and REI, as they begin making way for the pastel colors of the upcoming spring season. I know I was able to get a heavy winter coat the other day for less than $50!

  • TVs

Mid-January is when you will find some of the best deals you’ll see all year on quality TVs. On Black Friday, you’ll see cheap doorbuster models. But with the biggest football game of the year on deck the discounts will be on the highest quality models.

  • Computers and Laptops

You will see the best sales of laptops and computers three times a year. This includes back-to-school season, around the holidays, and in late January/early February. While the first two are self-explanatory, January and February is due to the upcoming spring release of newer models.

  • Furniture

New furniture is usually released in February and August. So retailers will lower prices in January in the hopes of clearing space for newer inventory on the way.

  • Tax Software

Start making your tax plan in January and you can score some early-bird deals now. Planning ahead has its advantages!

  • What Not To Buy In January

  • Mattresses

MLK Day weekend will bring some mattress sales. But for better prices, wait until President’s Day, Memorial Day or the 4th of July.

  • Major Appliances

Sometimes it just can’t wait. But if you can put off replacing your fridge, washer or dryer, wait until Presidents’ Day or Memorial Day. That’s when you’ll see better sales. MLK Day long weekend’s best deals will be on clothing and home items.

  • Jewelry

Stock is the highest right before Valentine’s Day. So wait until after the holiday when jewelers try to offload unpurchased stock. You’ll likely run into after-Christmas sales on holiday-themed jewelry in January if that’s what you’re after, but a wider selection of deals will come after Valentine’s Day.
