Ever Wonder Why Vodka Doesn’t Freeze?
May not freeze, but it sure as heck always tastes good.
Perhaps you’ve stuck a bottle of beer in the freezer in an effort to quickly cool it down to drinking temperature only to forget it, returning to an ice block, or worse, broken glass. But that doesn’t seem to happen with vodka or other liquors.
So why won’t vodka freeze?
While both beverages are liquid, beer has a lower alcohol content. Spirits, which clock in around 40 percent, will turn solid at -16 degrees F, which is far below the average temp inside your kitchen freezer. According to health expert and author Amy Leigh Mercree, “Freezing alcohol tends to diminish the flavor and scent,” which is likely why people will put vodka in the freezer, but not rum or whiskey.
