Filmmaker Tyler Perry wants to extend his generosity to victims of Hurricane Dorian in the Bahamas, as The Grio reports.
Perry took to social media to announce his pledge to assist the Bahamas in rebuilding. “As soon as I can, I will be there to do whatever I can to help you rebuild stronger and better,” Perry wrote.
The filmmaker joins a myriad of celebrities, including Rihanna, who have vowed to help residents of The Bahamas after “catastrophic damage” from the hurricane.
Hurricane Dorian, a Category 5 storm, ravaged the Caribbean nation’s largest island, wrecking tons of homes and damaging cars. The island’s airport is also currently underwater.
According to Red Cross spokesman Matthew Cochrane, more than 13,000 houses, or about 45% of the houses in Grand Bahama and Abaco, were believed to have been damaged or destroyed.
More than 60,000 people on the heavily-affected islands will need food, according to U.N. officials, and according to the Red Cross, about 62,000 people will need clean water for drinking.
“We are in the midst of one of the greatest national crises in our country’s history,” Prime Minister Hubert Minnis said during a news conference. “No effort or resources will be held back.”
“You cannot tell the difference as to the beginning of the street versus where the ocean begins,” Minnis said regarding some parts of Abaco. According to the Nassau Guardian, he called it “probably the most sad and worst day of my life to address the Bahamian people.”
Tyler Perry, who reportedly owns property in the Bahamas, wrote, “You’re not only in my heart and my prayers, you’re in my blood. God bless you. Stay Bahamas strong. The sun will shine again.”
