Throwback Video Of The Week: Wham! “Last Christmas”
George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley must have known what was coming their way when they named their second album Make It Big. The duo that went by the onomatopoeia Wham! did more than that in 1984.
Not only did that album reach #1 in the U.S., U.K., and nine other countries, it also spawned four international chart-topping singles: “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go,” “Careless Whisper,” “Freedom” and “Everything She Wants.”
The bonus track on the “Everything She Wants” single was no lump of coal either. A holiday season radio staple since its release, “Last Christmas” reached #1 in Denmark, Slovenia and Sweden; and #2 in Belgium, Netherlands, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Norway, New Zealand and the U.K.
In the video for “Last Christmas,” George Michael and his blonde girlfriend travel to visit other friends, including Andrew Ridgeley and his brunette girlfriend, at a ski chalet in Saas-Fee, Switzerland. It appears that Andrew’s girlfriend (portrayed by model Kathy Hill) was previously in a relationship with George.
There is a brief flashback to, you guessed it, last Christmas. It shows George presenting the brunette with a sparkly brooch. In the present time, Andrew is wearing the brooch, suggesting that the woman re-gifted it to him after she and George had split up.
There are lots of introspective and longing looks from both George and the brunette throughout the video that suggest they might still have feelings for one another. But in the end, George leaves with his blonde date, Andrew is still with the brunette, and no one actually did any skiing.
