Ellen DeGeneres Golden Globes Speech
Ellen DeGeneres’ speech at the 2020 Golden Globes was all about the power of TV — and of course, the LOLs. While she was “humbled and honored” to receive this year’s Carol Burnett Award she was also relieved. “I knew coming in I would win,” DeGeneres said about the special award which is predetermined. “There’s nothing worse than sitting there like most of you, sitting there and wondering if you’re going to win.”
The real winner might have been the audience, though, who got to hear the talk show host joke about going long with her speech since no one will stop her. But, she also talked about how TV allowed her to be herself. When she watched the “larger than life” Burnett’s show it “always felt like she was speaking to me.” As if Burnett was saying, DeGeneres joked, that “It’s OK, I’m gay, too.” Kate McKinnon could relate since she thanked DeGeneres for letting her know she wasn’t an “alien” because she identified as gay.
In all seriousness, though, DeGeneres said, “All I’ve ever wanted to do is make someone laugh,” but helping people has been the best part of her job. “The real power of television,” she said was that when people “watch my show and then go out and do the same thing in their own lives.” Pretty inspiring, right?
