Weirdest Music Video Ever Is From Hall & Oates
Starting this Friday at 5 PM, we are hooking you up with all ‘Yacht Rock’ tunes. The definition of ‘Yacht Rock’ is: a style of smooth, tuneful rock music popular especially in the US in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Examples include tunes from Steely Dan, Toto, Christopher Cross, and Hall & Oates.
In 1973, Hall & Oates released their song “She’s Gone” and produced a video for it and it is truly odd. The video did air on MTV in the 80’s, but I don’t remember it. And I watched a LOT of MTV. This video was ‘viral’ before viral was a thing!
The video is a low-budget mini art film and it still looks weird 50 years later. Both Daryl Hall and John Oates are extremely young and both look like they could be under the influence of something. Hall is wearing platform sandals with socks and is rockin’ a David Bowie-esque mullet. Oates is in a sleeveless tuxedo shirt and eventually ends up playing guitar in a penguin costume. Both are just sitting in chairs. They look like they’re in a doctor’s waiting room.
Randomly, a woman walks in front of the two, and a guy in a devil costume is seen walking behind her. . ??? When the woman and the devil walk by, Hall & Oates throw Monopoly money into the air. It’s three minutes and 29 seconds of confusion. At the end of the video Hall & Oates get up and walk off the set, leaving the devil onscreen, sitting in a chair.
It’s so weird! Of course, some would describe this as ‘performance art’. It could be considered that. Maybe they were ahead of their time OR maybe they were just high! Watching it now is just strange. And of course since it was made so long ago, it looks dated.
Oates was recently interviewed and he discussed the odd video. Without question, you’ll hear Hall & Oates this weekend for the ‘Yacht Rock’ weekend and you may even hear “She’s Gone” If you can’t wait til 5 PM Friday, the video is below so you can get your fix. Enjoy!
