Moment With Mel: Ladies Staying Safe
Crime is a part of life but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be mindful and aware of what’s going on around us. This week I’ve read three articles and seen two TikTok videos on women staying safe. Now, men need to stay safe too, but women have to be more vigilant. It’s just the way it is unfortunately.
Phil and I had a discussion about this earlier in the week. I saw an article on BoredPanda.com where women all around the world gave tips on how they stay safe. I was chatting with Phil about how many things women have to think about before they go outside, especially if it’s dark. We have to look around constantly so we aren’t attacked. This isn’t being paranoid. Women just need to be constantly in tune with their surroundings.
Women learn at an early age many self-defense tactics. The lessons range from how to hold your keys in your hand in case you need to attack someone to locking your doors as soon as you get in the car or home. Many women carry guns or pepper-spray just in case. It’s a scary world out there.
That being said, there were two TikTok videos that went viral this week that were about women being safe. Two different women had odd things happen to them and they shared videos explaining the situations in order to help others.
TikTok user @insanesluug was recording a video showing off things she bought at CVS when a stranger approached her car. She rolled down her window a bit and the man had a strange request. He said he didn’t want to bother her, but he wanted to know how her feet smelled. WTH?! She rolled up her window quickly. She shared what happened on TikTok and the video has been seen over 3 million times.
Ladies, you should never sit in your car in a dark parking lot. I don’t care if you’re texting or recording a video. It can be potentially dangerous, as you see in @insanesluug’s video. You should also never roll your window down. If someone approaches your car, and you can’t hear them well, ask them to speak louder. You don’t know who this person is or what they want. Never give them any access to you or your vehicle.
Another woman on TikTok, user Hesheybae (aka actor Shey Greyson), shared a series of videos describing how her quick thinking may have saved her from something dangerous. A man asked to take a picture of her dog. She didn’t think too much about that so she said yes. Quickly she realized that the man was holding her dog’s collar which had her address on it.
There’s a whole ruckus surrounding what @Hesheybae did next, but eventually she had the man delete the photo from his phone and from his album. She stood there and watched him, which was smart. He could have been waiting on her at night when she took her dog out.
Many of us wouldn’t have thought about this! I only have my number on the back of my dog’s tags, but even when I post a picture to social media, I make sure that the dog’s name side of the tag is in the picture.
It sucks that women have be so cautious. And I know there are others that have to be careful as well. But it’s better to stay safe! I’ve never taken any self-defense classes ( I grew up with three brothers) but I’m up for doing one. I don’t have an affiliation with any self-defense school or classes, but I found this online
Always stay alert ladies! We’ve all heard it: it’s better to be safe than sorry. And thanks to the women all over that share their stories in order to help others stay safe.
