Keeping Cocktails Low-Cal
You could serve this tropical delight in a tiki-style glass, but a standard large Collins glass is just as fun with this dark rum-based cocktail.
What are the best cocktails to sip when you’re focused on losing weight? Alcohol can get tricky because it’s not the booze itself you have to watch out for, it’s the things you mix with it. Most liquors have about the same number of calories, according to registered dietitian Amy Gorin.
Different types of alcohol including vodka, rum, whiskey, and tequila all have about 100 calories a shot, with no sugar and zero carbs. But when you turn that tequila into a margarita, you’re drinking a sugar bomb and those calories can add up fast to throw off your weight loss goals.
So what’s the best way to order a drink when you’re trying to lose weight? Here’s what the experts suggest:
- Keep it simple – Registered dietitian Keri Gans recommends sticking to basics, like a gin with a squeeze of fresh lime instead of a standard gin and tonic, which has added sugar.
- Whiskey is your new BFF – Keep it low-cal by ordering whiskey or scotch and adding water or a no-calorie mixer like club soda to “open up the vivid flavors,” Gorin suggests.
- Customize your ingredients – You can ask for swaps to keep the calories down in your drink of choice, like ordering a margarita with less agave or a mojito with less sugar. Also, ask the bar if they’re serving 100% juice or a juice cocktail, which has a lot of added sugar and calories.
- Add all the fruits for flavor – Boost the flavor of your beverage by adding muddled fruit, suggests registered dietitian Marissa Meshulam. She says splashes of lemon, lime, and soda water can elevate your fruit-filled cocktail.
