Woman Left With ‘Shark Hand’ After Life Saving Surgery
When I saw this headline, it took me back to the days of the “Weekly World News”. Remember all the ‘Batboy’ stories?! Those were great! As weird as this story is, it’s true and quite inspirational. A woman now has a ‘shark hand’ after doctors sew it inside her stomach during surgery. And yes, they meant to do it.
Sadie Demp woke up after 11 days in a medically induced coma to find that her left hand now looks like a shark. The 34-year-old developed a sepsis infection after having a kidney stone removed, which caused major problems. Doctors sew her hand into a pouch in her stomach after her fingers were amputated to maintain blood circulation.
According to the New York Post, when doctors woke her up, she found that her hand resembled a lobster claw…or a shark. I’ve never heard of anything like this!
When I contracted a staph infection after neck surgery doctors said they thought they may have to have an arm amputated. Apparently, the infection spread from my neck into my body and into my arm. I’m lucky the antibiotics worked quickly while in the hospital. My doctor said I was the first patient he’d had in years so close to death. Always good to hear!
Demp is a true inspiration though. She’s been posting TikTok videos where she uses the hand to lip-sync along to the “Baby Shark” song, mimics a fish, and uses it to apply makeup. She’s not out of the woods yet; doctors say they’ll have to amputate her other hand and both of her legs below the knees.
I cannot imagine how she feels and what she’s going through. It’s frightening how a routine surgery can go so bad so quickly. There is no question that her sense of humor will help her through this ordeal. My heart breaks for her and I wish her all the best!
