People Are Getting Rid Of Their Christmas Trees By Eating Them
This is a new one! Folks that have real Christmas trees are disposing of them by eating them. Yup. EATING them! The idea comes from Julia Georgallis, the author of ‘How To Eat Your Christmas Tree.’ Yes, there’s a book!
According to the New York Post, Georgallis hosts a supper club in east London. She says you can use the needles from a Christmas tree for flavor in dishes. I’ll admit that I get this. You’d use the needles like you’d use fresh rosemary or bay leaves. Although I’m not sure I’ve ever had a ‘pine’ flavored dish.
There’s someone on TikTok here in the U.S. that’s going viral for her use of pine needles. @haley.kales uses the pine needles and branches for tea and broth. Some people are also using them to make a syrup by adding sugar and water and boiling it.
When I’ve had a real tree in the past, I’ve used the branches and needles to keep the house smelling nice. I’ve put them in a vase with water. I’ve never thought of using the needles in food though. I guess I always thought the tree would be toxic to consume.
Those who are using their trees in food and drink DO say that the tree cannot be treated with anything as that could cause you to become ill. If you still have your tree, let me know if you use it in food! I’m interested to know how you use it.
