Guns N’ Roses Coming To Charlotte This Year
The year was 1987. I was 17 years old and was obsessed with ‘Headbanger’s Ball’ on MTV. That’s where I first heard and saw the band Guns N’ Roses. The video for ‘Welcome to the Jungle’ came on and I was mesmerized. The sound and the look of the band had my attention. I immediately went out the next day and bought the ‘Appetite for Destruction’ cassette. And 36 years later that album is still one of my all-time favorites.
When the band was on their first tour, opening for other bands, I saw them in Charlotte. If I’m not mistaken, they opened for Motley Crue in 1987 here in Charlotte. The show was at the ‘old’ Charlotte Coliseum on Independence Blvd. I have fond memories of that venue. Some of my most memorable musical moments happened there. My first ‘real rock’ show was there in 1984. I was 14 years old, and my mom took me and some friends to see Bon Jovi open for the Scorpions. I went as a Bon Jovi fan and left a Scorpions fan!
I’ve never wanted to see Guns N’ Roses since the 80’s. To me, after seeing the ‘Appetite for Destruction’ album live, nothing can compare to that. Now that I’m getting older, part of me wants to see the band one more time. And if you’re a fan, you’ll have that shot!
Guns N’ Roses has announced that they’re coming to Charlotte this year. They’ll play the Spectrum Center on August 29. Tickets will go on sale for the show on March 3 at 10 a.m. My gut says they’ll sell out. There are so many old school rockers like me that want to relive that 80’s magic one more time.
